Public Art
In 2016 I was chosen as an artist collaborator for “Meet Me at the Triangles,” an exciting public art installation in Wheaton, MD. This piece represents the history and the present of the people of the town of Wheaton. Norie Sato of Seattle, WA was the lead artist on this project, installed in October 2020. Fellow local artist Erick B. Ricks was also instrumental in the creation of this project. The artist team travelled to Salt Lake City, UT in 2019 to visit the foundry producing the piece, and learned about and worked in casting bronze objects for the piece.
The walk-in installation measures 18’10” x 8’4” x17’H, and is permanenty installed in Marian Fryer Town Plaza, adjacent to the public seating and performance areas, and the local Metro station.
My use of repeated images and patterning was applied to vernacular architecture in Wheaton for the exterior laser cut stainless steel panels. The interior objects are made of cast bronze, and include casts of all three of our hands, along with randomly-placed objects representing the people and activities in Wheaton.
The curvaceous perforated stainless steel “wings” affixed to the main structure, are made from multiples of my photograph of a house detail in town, duplicated and formed into a fan shape. This is my favorite part of the installation: the wings glint in the sun, and they throw patterned shadows onto the main structure.
